LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team rallied to force a fifth set but fell to Emporia State 3-2 on Tuesday evening. The Cardinals drop to 7-8 on the season, entering the bulk of conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emporia jumped out in front in the opening set, 17-11, only to see Jewell rally with a 7-1 run and tie things up at 18-all. The Hornets outscored the Cardinals 7-3 the rest of the way to win 25-21.
- Jewell was the strong opener in set two, holding an 17-11 lead midway through. ESU got within three but a kill from Bella LaPorta and a Hornet error gave the Cardinals the set 25-20.
- Neither team could muster more than a three point advantage in the third set, until late when the Cardinals went on top by four, 24-20, after a LaPorta ace. The Hornets rallied with a 5-0 run to go back in front, 25-24 and reverse set point in their favor. Jewell held off four set points, but eventually fell 30-28.
- With Emporia State leading 23-21 late in set four, it was the Cardinals who reversed their fortunes this time, going on a 5-1 run behind a kill and block from Anna Godfredsen to win 26-24 and force a fifth set.
- The Hornets broke out to an 11-5 lead in the finale and never looked back, taking the set 15-7.
KEY STATS
- Godfredsen tied her career high with 15 kills while LaPorta also added 15 to go with a team best 24 digs and two aces.
- Tatum Ernt finished with eight kills on a .368 clip with five blocks.
- Haidan Baade added 18 digs while Samantha Thompson finished with 16 to go with a match high 30 assists.

Jewell hits the road this weekend for GLVC play, stopping first at Missouri S&T on Friday followed by Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.
