OWENSBORO, Ky. - The William Jewell volleyball team defeated Shorter University on Saturday morning at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invite to win their fifth straight game. The Cardinals dropped a five set match to Northern Michigan to close the weekend and return home at 5-3 on the season.
vs. SHORTER
- The two teams battled point-for-point for much of the opener sitting tied at 20, before Shorter committed five straight errors to give Jewell the set.
- The Cardinals fell into a 12-7 hole early but rallied, going on a 8-3 run to tie the set at 15 after a kill from Anna Godfredsen. Leading by one late, Jewell got back-to-back kills by Tatum Ernt to win 25-22 and take a two set lead.
- Leading by one midway through set three, Jewell went on a 7-1 run to open up a big lead and finished strong with another 8-3 run to get the sweep 25-16.
KEY STATS
- The offense was balanced as five different players had at least six kills. Bella LaPorta and Alex Dvorak led the Cardinals with nine a piece while the latter had five blocks.
- LaPorta and Haidan Baade each had 13 digs with Jordan Collard chipping in 10.
vs. NORTHERN MICHIGAN
- Jewell started the final match of the weekend strong, opening up a 16-6 lead behind four kills from Katy Garrison and two by Godfredsen. Northern Michigan got back within eight but three kills and an error gave the Cards the first set, 25-15.
- After falling in an 8-2 deficit, Jewell rallied with a 12-3 run, led by three kills from Ernt to go in front 14-11. The Cardinals rolled to a 25-19 win, taking advantage of five Wildcat errors and two Dvorak points.
- With Northern Michigan trailing 14-9 after back-to-back errors, the Wildcats finished the set on a 16-6 run to take set three.
- NMU hit .433 in set four while limiting the Cardinals to a .152 clip to win 25-14 and force the deciding frame.
- The Cardinals fell into a 9-1 hole in set five and could not recover, falling 15-6.
KEY STATS
- Dvorak put up a season best 15 kills and five blocks on a .538 attack percentage.
- Ernt added 11 kills while Godfredsen and LaPorta had 10 each.
- Samantha Thompson dished out 26 assists while Drew Baxter added 19.
- Baade had 16 digs while LaPorta finished with 13 for a double-double.

The Cardinals will travel to Searcy, Arkansas next weekend for the Harding Tournament where they will take on East Central (Okla.), Ouachita Baptist and Arkansas Monticello.
