LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team played even with Southwest Baptist in three of four quarters on Saturday but were outscored 25-9 in the second period allowing the Bearcats to pull away. The Cardinals fell 68-53 to drop to 4-17 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 8-3 in the opening quarter, the Cardinals got a big three from Elizabeth Ernsting to spark a 9-2 run and go on top 12-10 after an offensive rebound and put back from Bree Shannon.
- SBU went on a 12-4 run to close the second quarter and take a 14-point advantage into the locker room, leading 35-21.
- After the Bearcats expanded their lead to 16, Jewell rallied as Chloe Frank scored eight straight points to pull the Cardinals back within 10. However, SBU responded and got a layup from Kelsey Blakemore to make it a 50-36 game heading into the final frame.
- Jewell started the final period with a quick 10-0 run on seven consecutive points from Shannon, followed by a three by Frank to get Cardinals back within four. Both teams traded buckets over the final minutes but Jewell ran out of time to close the gap.
KEY STATS
- Shannon came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 13 points while Frank added 11.
- Skyler Boylan pulled down a team best eight rebounds in just 15 minutes of play while Ayden Shannon handed out three assists.
