Cardinals Come Up Short Against No. 19 Missouri-St. Louis

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team led for much of Thursday's game with No. 19 Missouri-St. Louis but the Tritons rallied late in the second half to defeat the Cardinals 62-56. Jewell falls to 10-10 on the season and 7-5 in GLVC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at nine early, the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run capped by consecutive threes from Grant Stubbs and Mason Alexander to open up a 17-9 lead. The Tritons quickly closed the gap to two before Isaac Patterson got a steal and layup followed by handing out an assist on Eli Wingert's jumper to push the advantage back to seven, 27-20.
  • UMSL took advantage of a foul on a three-point attempt to get back within three but Alexander hit a runner at the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 31-27 lead at the break.
  • Jewell came out of the locker room and immediately set a high tone with an alley oop slam from Kobe McKinley but the Tritons followed with back-to-back scores, including a traditional three point play to make it a one-point game, 33-32.
  • With 12:22 to play, Heri Tshiyoyo hit two free throws to give the Cardinals a six-point lead. UMSL followed with a 20-8 run over the next 10 minutes to go back in front, 56-50. Jewell scored six points over the final 60 seconds but the Tritons connected on all six free throws to close the game.
