LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell men's basketball team opened the new year with a big win, taking down Illinois Springfield, 73-63, to improve to 7-7 on the season, 4-2 in league play. UIS meanwhile drops to 9-4 and 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 5-2 in the early going, the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run, capped by threes from Mason Alexander and Jordan Jermain to go in front by seven and force a UIS timeout. Jewell continued to own the glass and hold the Stars at bay, maintaining a double-digit lead through most of the remainder of the first half and holding a 31-23 advantage at the break.
- After UIS cut the deficit to just six early, Jewell responded with a 24-7 run, capped by another Jermain triple and a layup from Isaac Patterson off a turnover, to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the day, 57-36.
- From there, things got interesting as foul trouble piled up and a game between two of the GLVC's top teams got tense. The Prairie Stars went on a 25-10 run over the next seven minutes, as the Cardinals were down two starters due to fouls and two technical fouls were assessed, one to each team, to suddenly make it a two-possession game, 67-61.
- Jewell came up clutch down the stretch when it mattered most, connecting on 4-of-6 free throws and forcing UIS into contested shots as Jevaughn Ferguson cleaned up the glass, with five big rebounds in the last six minutes to secure the 10-point victory.
KEY STATS
- Jermain paced the offense with 18 points. Three other Cardinals finished in double figures as Alexander added 14 while Grant Stubbs and Kobe McKinley had 11 a piece.
- Ferguson followed close behind with nine points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
- The Cardinals shot nearly 48% from the floor while holding 41.8%, their second lowest of the season.
- Jewell took advantage of multiple turnovers and long rebounds, jumping out to 24 fast break points, forcing 13 Star turnovers tied for their highest of the year.
- The Cards also cleaned up on the glass, out rebounding their opponent 37-25 as four different players had at least six boards, including Ferguson (7), McKinley (7), Heri Tshiyoyo (7) and Alexander (6).
