Cardinal Bench Leads Jewell Past Illinois Springfield, 76-63

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell women's basketball team got back on track on Thursday night with a 76-63 win over Illinois Springfield. The Cardinals improve to 4-12 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was highly contested with neither team taking more than a three-point lead. Down 17-14 with two minutes to go, Katie Knock put in two free throws before Bree Shannon scored the final five points of the period and put Jewell on top 21-19.
  • UIS came out of the quarter break with a vengeance, going on a 10-0 run to go back in front by eight. The Cardinals responded though as Emree Zars scored to kick start a 19-5 that saw six different players score and take a 40-34 lead into the intermission.
  • Jewell pushed their lead to 12 early in the second half after an Ayden Shannon steal led to a layup for Kate Hillyer. The Stars cut the advantage in half late in the period but a bucket by Libby Arnold and two free throws from D'Asya Collier-Williams put Jewell back in front by double-digits, 55-44.
  • A high scoring fourth quarter featured 40 combined points. The Cardinals extended their lead to a game high 15 with under a minute to play before finishing with the 76-63 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Bree Shannon tied her career high with 19 points off the bench to go with a career best nine rebounds.
  • Chloe Frank picked up the first double-double of her young career with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Zars added 15 points.
  • Jewell dominated the glass, out rebounding the Stars 51-26 with 19 second chance points.
