Fourth Quarter Rally Not Enough as Cardinals Fall to Quincy

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team tried to mount a fourth quarter comeback on Saturday, scoring 21 points over the final minutes, but fell 41-21 to Quincy University. The Cardinals drop to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quincy started fast, scoring on the second play of the game with a 68-yard run by JQ Brown to put the Hawks on top early.
  • A 26-yard punt into the wind gave the Cardinals great field possession two drives later to set up a drive that ended in Taylor Eggers being pushed across the line for the score an knot things up.
  • The QU defense put the pressure on late in the opening frame, picking up back-to-back interceptions on their way to building a 38-7 halftime lead.
  • After a penalty nullified a QU touchdown, the Hawks connected on a 35-yard field goal to push their lead to 41-7.
  • From there, the rest of the game belonged to Jewell. On the ensuing drive, the Cardinals traveled 75 yards to the house as Kaylin Merriweather finished off the drive with a one yard run.
  • Another penalty set up a first-and-10 at the QU 25 yard line from where Eggers connected with Deldrionn Amos to make it a 20-point game.
  • A successful onside kick from Paul Geelen set up another score, this time to Nathan Barnett, his sixth of the year. The Cardinals again got the ball back and into Quincy territory but a costly turnover ended the game, 41-28.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Barnett picked up 135 receiving yards on seven catches while Layne Cavanah added 43 and AJ Austene 40.
  • Merriweather led the ground game with 21 yards and one touchdown.
  • Eggers finished 22-for-46 with 292 passing yards and two touchdowns.
