Cardinals Fall to Upper Iowa in Four Sets

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of Upper Iowa University on Friday evening by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19. The Cardinals fall to 9-13 on the season and 1-6 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the Cardinals leading by one midway through the first set, Upper Iowa went on a 7-2 run to open up a 20-16 advantage. Both teams traded points late but a kill gave the Peacocks the 25-20 opening set win. 
  • UIU went on another mid-set run in the second, with 10-2 spur to break out to a 19-12 lead. Jewell got back within four but Upper Iowa won three of the last four points to take the second set, 25-19. 
  • The Cardinals put their foot on the gas in the third frame, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage, behind back-to-back blocks from Katy Garrison and Anna Godfredsen. The Peacocks were able to get back within two late but a Bella LaPorta kills combined with solo blocks from Garrison and Maliyah Johnson gave the Cards the set, 25-20. 
  • Trailing by four midway through set four, the Cardinals put together four straight points backed by kills from LaPorta and Godfredsen to tie things up at 14. Upper Iowa outscored Jewell 11-5 over the final stretch to win 25-19. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • LaPorta picked up a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs while Alex Dvorak added 14 kills to help lead the offense. 
  • Garrison led the defense with six blocks with Godfredsen adding four while three players finished with 10 digs. 
  • Samantha Thompson had 25 assists with Jesa Wallace handing out 22. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is back in action quickly as they host Truman State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
