LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team rallied late in the fifth set to escape with a 3-2 win over Truman State on Saturday afternoon. The victory lifts the Cardinals to 10-13 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals were hot out of the gate, taking a 16-11 lead early after three straight kills from different players. Jewell maintained their lead the rest of the way, as a kill from Maliyah Johnson ended the set, 25-17.
- Jewell was dominant in the second frame, jumping out to a 9-1 lead, behind four kills from Bella LaPorta. Truman State got back within six but another 6-0 run from the Cardinals pushed the lead to 21-8. The Bulldogs got four late points but the lead was too large as Jewell won 25-12.
- The Cardinals looked like they would roll to the sweep, grabbing another early 8-1 lead in set three but Truman State rallied, outscoring Jewell 24-15 the rest of the way to take the 25-23 win.
- The Bulldogs maintained the momentum into set four, jumping out to a 16-10 advantage. The Cardinals got back within two after a kill from Anna Godfredsen but Truman was able to force the fifth set, winning 25-21.
- Tied at seven midway through the finale, Truman scored three straight to go in front and eventually lead 13-11. A service ace, combined with a block and kill from Katy Garrison pushed the Cardinals back on top, 14-13. Both teams traded match points until Brooke Tholen's ace gave Jewell the 18-16 set five win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals hit .339 as a team as LaPorta finished with a double-double fo 19 kills and 22 digs, both teams highs.
- Garrison put down a career high 17 kills on a .577 attack percentage to go with a career best 10 blocks.
- Godfredsen also added 13 kills and seven rejections while Samantha Thompson handed out a career high 40 assists, the most by a Cardinal since 2021.
- Alexis Nunn pulled up 14 digs with Hannah Cope adding 13 and Tholen, 12.
