Cardinals Drop 3-1 Decision at Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The William Jewell volleyball team fell 3-1 on Friday night at Illinois Springfield. The Cardinals drop to 10-14 on the season and 2-7 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at five early, UIS went on a 7-1 run to take the lead. Late in the set, the Cardinals rallied with a 6-2 run to pull within one, 20-19 after a kill from Bella LaPorta. The Stars finished off the set with a kill to win, 25-22. 
  • Jewell started set two quickly, jumping out to an 18-10 advantage, aided by two kills each from LaPorta and Anna Godfredsen. The Stars got back within five late but back-to-back points from LaPorta and Alex Dvorak gave the Cards the set, 25-19. 
  • Set three went back-and-forth early, until four straight Cardinal errors gave UIS the lead, 15-11. The Stars got three late kills from Maria Spengler to end the frame, 25-21. 
  • Trailing 14-9, Jewell went on a 6-0 run behind McKinzie Thompson's serve, go back in front 15-14. However, the Stars countered with an 8-1 run of their own, aided by five aces to take a 22-16 lead and cruise to a 25-19 victory.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell out-hit the Stars, .243 to .200, committing just 11 errors while posting nine blocks. 
  • LaPorta led the offense with 17 kills while Dvorak added 10. 
  • Hannah Cope dug up a season best 18 balls with Alexis Nunn adding 10. 
  • LaPorta and Katy Garrison finished with a team high four blocks. 
  • Jesa Wallace handed out 20 assists while Samantha Thompson had 13. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will look to respond on Saturday with a tough test against No. 21 ranked Quincy University at 3 p.m.
