Cardinals Fall in Extra Points at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The William Jewell volleyball team wrapped up their non-conference games on Tuesday night with a 3-2 loss at Pittsburg State. The Cardinals drop to 10-16 on the year. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opener was a back-and-forth affair with neither team taking more than a three-point lead. Tied at 20 late, back-to-back errors combined with consecutive aces from Brooke Tholen gave Jewell a 24-20 lead. A Pittsburg State error gave Jewell the set, 25-22. 
  • Tied at 10 early in set two, the Gorillas outscored Jewell 10-5 to go in front and roll to a 25-19 win. 
  • Set three featured 16 ties, including at 22-all when a kill from Ivy Fink gave PSU the lead. A Cardinal error and another Fink kill won the set 25-23 for the Gorillas. 
  • The fourth frame was all Cardinals as they used a 9-2 run, aided by back-to-back aces from Jesa Wallace to open up an 18-11 lead. The Cardinals maintained their advantage and cruised to a 25-16 win to force the finale. 
  • In the deciding set, Jewell broke out to an 11-6 lead, taking advantage of six Pittsburg State errors. The Gorillas rallied, going on a 9-2 run to tie the set at 13. The Cardinals held two match points until consecutive miscues ended the set 17-15. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell outhit the Gorillsas, .270 to .266 led by Bella LaPorta's 20 kills. Alex Dvorak added 15 kills on a .400 attack percentage while Maliyah Johnson chipped in 13. 
  • Wallace handed out a career-high 56 assists to set the new NCAA era record for assists in a five-set match. 
  • LaPorta finished with 18 digs with Alexis Nunn and Hannah Cope each adding 16. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns home for the final three regular season matches of the season beginning with a Friday match up against Southwest Baptist.
