LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team rallied from down two sets to defeat Southwest Baptist in a reverse sweep. The Cardinals move to 11-16 on the season and 3-8 in conference play with the win. In the victory, junior
Bella LaPorta reached the 1,000 kill milestone, becoming the third player in program history to do.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals came out sluggish, falling into a 21-13 hole before putting together a 9-2 run and pull within one, 23-22. Back-to-back errors gave SBU the set, 25-22.
- The Bearcats again jumped out to a big lead in the second frame, 19-9 after an attack error but Jewell again put together a rally. Leading by 10 late in the set, SBU committed five errors as the Cards got back within five but finished off the win 25-18.
- The third set was Jewell's turn to carry the early momentum, grabbing a, 18-9 lead after an ace from Alexis Nunn. The Bearcats made things interesting, tying the set at 24 but a kill by Anna Godfredsen and a setting error from SBU gave the Cards the win, 26-24 and extended the match.
- Tied at eight early in set four, the Cardinals went on a 12-6 run after back-to-back kills from LaPorta and Maliyah Johnson to make it 20-14, Cardinals. The teams traded points but an Alex Dvorak kill ended things for Jewell, 25-18, and forced set five.
- After SBU took a 3-1 lead, the teams traded points with seven ties. The Bearcats went in front by two, forcing a Jewell timeout after which the Cards went on a 6-0 run, led by three kills from Dvorak to go in front 14-10. SBU staved off two match points but another Dvorak kill ended things, 15-12.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta led the offense with 22 kills, including the 1,000th of her career to go with 13 digs.
- Dvorak added 13 kills, with five in the finale set, along with three blocks.
- Freshman setter Jesa Wallace handed out 57 assists to post her third straight career high and set the new five set record, which she had previously broke just three days earlier. She added a career best 12 digs.
- Nunn paced the defense with 24 digs with Hannah Cope adding 17 while Katy Garrison had a team high four blocks.
- After hitting -.029 in set two, Jewell rallied to hit at least .327 as a team over the remaining three sets to take the win.
