Cardinals Drop Five Set Match at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team fell at Maryville University in five sets on Friday evening. The Cardinals drop to 6-11 on the season and 1-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started the match on fire, hitting better than .480 in the opening set as a team. Leading 7-6, the Cardinals went on 10-5 run, capped by two kills from Maliyah Johnson. The Saints pulled back within three but another Johnson point ended things 25-20 in favor of Jewell. 
  • Set two was reversed as Maryville jumped out to an 11-3 lead before the Cardinals rallied with seven straight points to knot things up at 11. The Saints regained a late 20-16 lead and rolled to a six point win. 
  • The Cardinals took set three after rallying late. Trailing 21-19, Jewell got four kills from Johnson and Anna Godfredsen to go back in front, 23-22. Another Godfredsen kill and Maryville error gave the Cards the set 25-23. 
  • Set four was back-and-forth with neither team taking more than a three point lead until late. The Saints got consecutive kills from Ella Brinkmann to win 25-20.  
  • Jewell grabbed an early 4-1 lead in the final frame after a Katy Garrison kill but the Saints rallied with a 12-4 run to take a commanding 13-8 lead. The Cardinals got kills from Godfredsen and Bella LaPorta to get back withing two but a Grace Graham kill ended things, 15-12. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Johnson posted her second straight career high match with 21 kills on a .435 attack percentage as the freshman committed just one error on the day. 
  • LaPorta finished with another double-double with 16 kills and a team high 27 digs. 
  • Garrison picked up a dozen kills and six blocks. 
  • Samantha Thompson posted 32 assists with Jesa Wallace adding 20 while Alexis Nunn had 17 digs. 

UP NEXT 
Jewell will look to rally on Saturday with a match at Missouri S&T, beginning at 3 p.m.
