KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team picked up a big in-region win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Purdue Northwest 73-68 to finish the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge 2-0 for the first time. The win marked the 1700th in program history, becoming the sixth program in NCAA Division II to reach the milestone.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Purdue Northwest took an early 16-10 lead before the Cardinals rallied with 27-11 run as five different players scored over the final 12 minutes. Jewell took a 37-27 lead into the intermission.
- The Pride opened the second half by immediately cutting the advantage down and going back in front 49-48 with under 11 minutes to play. A three from Grant Stubbs put the Cardinals back on top briefly but the teams traded ties over the next several minutes.
- Knotted at 60, Kobe McKinley scored five straight points to put Jewell back on top for good. The defense maintained at least a four point lead the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McKinley led all scorers with 27 to go with nine rebounds and five steals.
- Stubbs added 15 points on 6-of-13 from the floor while Jermain and Trey Shannon each added 11.
- The Cardinals out-shot the Pride 41.4% to 40.7% and were 12-of-14 from the free throw line.
