Jewell Downs Washburn 85-70 in Home Opener

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team opened the Mabee Center on Wednesday evening with an 85-70 non-conference win over Washburn University. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 for the first time since November 2017. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Washburn used some early offensive rebounds to tie things at 11, six minutes into the game but Mawutor Nogoson responded with a three to put the Cardinals back in front.
  • Tied at 30 late in the opening half, a triple from Trey Shannon kick started 12-4 run by the Cardinals, capped by back-to-back threes by Kobe McKinley and Isaac Patterson to give Jewell a 42-34 advantage headed into the locker room. 
  • The Cardinals wasted no time expanding their lead to 22 in the early part of the second half as threes from Shannon and Kanukayi Gudza and two from Grant Stubbs made it 63-41 with just over 13 minutes to go. 
  • The Ichabods made a late push, cutting the lead to 13 after a three at the 5:44 mark, but Jewell hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the win. 


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals put all five starters in double-figures led by Stubbs' 18 to go with five rebounds and four assists. 
  • McKinley added 17, Patterson had a season high 16 while Jordan Jermain finished with 14 and Shannon a dozen. 
  • Jewell shot 50.9% from the field and 52.2% from long range, going 12-for-23.
  • The Cardinals forced 18 turnovers that led to 28 points.
