UMSL Rallies to Down Cardinals in Overtime

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team suffered a 73-69 loss in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Thursday night at Missouri-St. Louis. The Cardinals fall to 5-2 on the season and 0-1 on league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinal offense got off to a slow start, falling behind by as many as seven early. A bucket from Kobe McKinley started a Jewell rally, going on a 14-2 run, capped by a three from Trey Shannon. The Cards held UMSL scoreless for the final 5:36 to go into the break leading 28-23.
  • Jewell began to gain separation midway through the second half as back-to-back threes from Shannon and Jordan Jermain to take a 49-38 lead with under 10 minutes to play.
  • From there, the Tritons closed regulation on a 26-15 run to tie the game at 64 on a layup with 4.5 seconds remaining.
  • Neither offenses could find a rhythm, combining for just 14 points. Grant Stubbs, Isaac Patterson and Eli Wingert all hit free throws during the period but the Tritons scored the final three points to take the win, 73-69.
