KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball downed crosstown rival Rockhurst University 84-79 on Saturday afternoon to earn the point in the Kansas City Crown standings. The Cardinals improve to 6-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Cardinals came out of the gates hot, grabbing an early eight point lead after back-to-back layups from Eli Wingert but Rockhurst responded with a 12-4 run to knot things up at 15 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. 
• Luke Jordan hit a three at the 5:14 mark to put Jewell up seven with Jordan Jermain adding one of his own to make it 38-26. 
• With the Cardinals leading by nine, Rockhurst used a 15-2 run to go back in front, 52-49 with under 13 to play. A triple from Kyle Scharbrough put the Cardinals back on top as Wingert and Justice Sutton combined for nine points over the next six-plus minutes to keep Jewell in front.
• The Cardinals were 11-for-12 from the free throw line over the final minutes to secure their sixth victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Jermain led four players in double figures with 21 points along with a team high seven rebounds. 
• Trey Shannon added 17 points and four assists while Wingert had 15 points and Sutton 10. 
• The Cardinals shot 49% from the field and were 24-of-31 from the free throw line, while scoring 38 points in the paint.

Jewell will travel to Quincy, Illinois next weekend for the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic where they will take on Wayne State (Mich.) and East-West University.
