QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell men's basketball team outscored Quincy University 10-4 over the final two minutes to pull away for a 66-53 win. The Cardinals move to 14-12 on the season and 11-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, their most wins since joining the league in 2011-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell started strong, taking an early 14-6 lead after two triples from Mason Alexander and one by Jordan Jermain. The Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to go back in front with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half but points from Isaac Patterson and Eli Wingert, quickly tied things back up at 18.Â
- The Cardinals went on a 9-0 run, capped by three free throws from Alexander, to go back on top by eight but Quincy hit two three pointers over the last 50 seconds of the period to make it just a two point game at the break, 32-30.Â
- Tied at 36 early in the second half, Jewell scored five buckets in the paint to grab a five point lead and expanded it to eight after a traditional three point play by Grant Stubbs, with under 10 minutes remaining. Two free throws from Jermain gave the Cards a double-digit advantage but the Hawks came right back with a 6-0 spurt.Â
- Leading 56-51 with under four minutes to play, Eli Wingert slammed an alley-oop on one end before going down to the other to get a big block and swing the momentum back to Jewell. The Cardinals went 6-for-6 from the free throw line over the final two minutes to push the final to a 13-point advantage.Â
KEY STATS
- Alexander lead the Cardinals with 16, going 3-for-5 from long range, along with a career high eight rebounds.Â
- Kobe McKinley added 15 points with a team high three blocks while Wingert came off the bench to score 10.Â
- Jewell shot nearly 44% from the floor and made good on 19-of-21 free throws (90.5%), coming to just 9-of-15 by the Hawks.Â
