Jewell Bounces Back to Down Northeastern State in Extras

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The William Jewell baseball team defeated Northeastern State 8-7 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon to bounce back and win their first game of the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell broke the ice first, scoring four in the top of the second inning. Quincy Aldrich doubled down the left field line to score Will Brant, followed by a three-run home run off the bat of Jake Wilcox
  • The Riverhawks got one back in the bottom half of the frame, but the Cards added two more in the fifth inning on RBI from Brant and Kaden Owens
  • With Jewell leading by four with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Northeastern State hit a grand slam to tie the game and force extra innings. 
  • In the tenth, Wilcox homered for the second time to put the Cards up two, 8-6. 
  • A solo home run from C White brought NSU within one but Isaiah Keller walked and was picked off followed by a line out to end the game. 

KEY STATS
  • Wilcox led the offense with four hits, five RBI and two runs, including two long balls and a double. 
  • Jordan Phillips added three hits, including a double, while Brant and Aldrich had two base knocks a piece. 
  • Jackson Bodinson (1-0) earned the win in relief, working the final 1.2 frames, allowing just one hit. 
  • Chandler Ashby tossed the first seven innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out four. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals and Riverhawks will wrap up their three game series with a rubber game on Sunday afternoon.
