SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The William Jewell women's basketball team started fast on Saturday but couldn't keep pace with Illinois Springfield, falling 89-57. The Cardinals drop to 4-25 overall and 2-17 in the GLVC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Tied at 10 early, UIS went on a quick 7-2 run to open up a five point lead but the Cardinals came right back with an 8-3 run of their own to tie things up at 22-all after one period. 
• The Stars outscored Jewell 18-9 in the second quarter to build their lead to 13. Emree Zars hit two free throws followed by a Skyler Boylan bucket to close the half, trailing by just nine, 40-31. 
• Jewell kept things close through most of the third period, trailing by just eight after a free throw from Boylan with 2:37 to go. UIS closed the period with a 10-2 run to expand their lead to 16. 
• The Cardinals struggled offensively in the final frame, going 3-for-16 from the field as UIS was able to push their lead to as many as 32 late. 

KEY STATS

• Kate Hillyer led the way with 16 points while Zars added 11 and Katie Knock had 10 to go with two assists. 
• The Cardinals shot 34% from the floor and hit 17-of-22 free throws.

Jewell returns to the Mabee Center next Saturday to close the season with a 1 p.m. matchup against Truman State.
