Cardinals Rally for 21-2 Win in Game Two Against Wayne State

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team dropped their home opener 7-2 on Saturday but rallied to take game two 21-2 over Wayne State College (Neb.) to move to 2-3 on the season. 

Game 1 (Wayne State 7, Jewell 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wayne State took the early lead with two runs on three hits in the opening half inning. 
  • Kaden Owens grounded out to score Cole Conner in the bottom of the second before a Quincy Aldrich solo home run tied things up in the third. 
  • The Wildcats added two runs in the fourth three more in the seventh to take the opener. 

KEY STATS
  • Jewell was held to three hits, by Aldrich, Conner and Alex Epp
  • Jake MacDonald (0-2) took the loss, allowing four earned on five hits over six innings, while fanning six. 

Game 2 (Jewell 21, Wayne State 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell scored early and often in game two, plating six runs on four hits in the first inning. With two on, Dawson Tweet doubled to center followed by a Jonah Sanford triple to add two more. 
  • The Wildcats got on the board in the second but the Cards came right back as Will Brant doubled to score Connor and push the lead back to five.
  • Already leading 9-2 in the fourth inning, the Cardinals broke the gates open, scoring two runs on two hits. Brant scored on a wild pitch followed by a RBI single from Jake Wilcox and Sanford swiping home on a double steal. The next three runs were walked in to make it 15-2. 
  • The Cardinals added four more runs in the fifth before AJ Rios blasted his first career home run in the seventh to slam the door.  

KEY STATS
  • Jordan Phillips posted four hits and three RBI while Wilcox, Brant and Sanford each had two hits a piece. 
  • Wilcox and Nick Chanez also scored four times while Brant had three RBI.
  • Chandler Ashby (1-0) tossed a gem, working six frames, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
Jewell and the Wildcats wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
