LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader on Friday evening to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play 2-0. The Cardinals defeated Missouri S&T 7-4 and 2-0 to improve to 11-3 overall and win their 10
th in a row.
Game 1 (Jewell 7, Missouri 4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals took a big early lead, plating four runs in the bottom part of the first inning. The first four batters reached base on consecutive singles to quickly make it 1-0. With the bases loaded, Kaden Owens singled to center scoring two followed by a throwing error that allowed Jordan Phillips to cross the plate.
- The Miners got on the board with a run in the top of the third, but Jewell came back with a two-run home run off the bat of Quincy Aldrich to make it 6-1.
- Missouri S&T scored three runs on three hits in the fifth to get back within two.
- The Cardinals got a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to add an insurance run.
- The Miners made things interesting late, loading the bases with no outs before Jack Wells got two strikeouts and a flyout to end the threat.
KEY STATS
- The Cardinals finished with nine total hits, led by two from Alex Epp, who also had two RBI and scored a run.
- Owens and Aldrich also added two RBI apiece.
- Aiden Flood (2-0) earned his second win, working one inning in relief.
- Wells (1) got the first save of his Cardinal career, working a scoreless seventh inning.
Game 2 (Jewell 2, Missouri S&T 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Owens put the Cardinals on top early with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to score Jordan Phillips who doubled to lead off the frame.
- Chandler Ashby kept the Miners off the board, getting a key strikeout in the fifth inning to strand the tying run at third base.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Will Brant walked and advanced on a second on a wild pitch. A groundout got him to third before Phillips came through with another base hit to put an important insurance run on the board.
KEY STATS
- Jewell was limited to just five hits in the pitchers duel with Phillips having three of them, including two doubles.
- Ashby (3-0) remained unbeaten with the complete game shutout, allowing just a single hit while striking out eight.
