UMSL Rallies to Take Series Opener Over Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - After taking the lead in the sixth inning, the William Jewell baseball team saw Missouri-St. Louis rally to take an 11-7 series opening victory on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals drop to 15-8 on the year and 5-4 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMSL took the early lead, scoring three runs on three hits in the first inning. Jewell got one back in the bottom half as Jake Wilcox singled up the middle and scored on a Cole Conner base hit.
  • Two errors in the top half of the second added another run for the Tritons.
  • The Cardinals got two on the board in the bottom of the third as Jordan Phillips singled up the middle to score Dawson Tweet before scoring himself on a Will Brant double.
  • In the top of the fifth, UMSL again added to their lead, plating two runs on two hits and another Cardinal miscue, expanding their advantage to 6-3.
  • The Jewell bats put up a crooked number in the sixth frame, doing so with small ball. With two on, Quincy Aldrich laid down a bunt single to load them up. Kaden Owens scored on a wild pitch before Wilcox singled to score another run. A bunt single from Alex Epp again put two on for Conner who laid down yet another bunt to score Wilcox and give Jewell their first lead.
  • The Tritons rallied, scoring two in the seventh before adding another in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the opener.
