Cardinals Bounce Back with Doubleheader Sweep of UMSL

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team held off multiple late rallies from Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday to take both ends of a doubleheader by finals of 11-8 and 10-9. The Cardinals move to 17-8 on the season and 7-4 in conference play.

Game 1 (Jewell 11, UMSL 8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinal offense got off to a hot start in, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings. In the second, an RBI single from Dawson Tweet plated the first run, before Alex Epp and Jordan Phillips drew two bases loaded walks to make it 3-0.
  • Jewell broke the game open in the third frame as Jake Wilcox doubled to score two followed by a bases loaded balk added another. Cole Conner followed with an RBI down while Phillips added an RBI triple to right center and a sac fly from Drew Reed made it 10-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
  • Another Wilcox double plated another run in the bottom of the fourth but UMSL made things interesting late scoring eight runs over the final three innings but Jackson Bodinson finished off the complete game effort with a strikeout.

KEY STATS
  • Jewell picked up 11 hits on the game, led by three from Wilcox while Tweet added two.
  • Wilcox also finished with three RBI and scored twice.
  • Bodinson (3-1) earned his third win of the year, working all seven innings, allowing eight earned with five strikeouts.

Game 2 (Jewell 10, UMSL 9)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals again got things moving in the early going, scoring three runs in the first starting with back-to-back solo home runs from Tweet and Epp. Kaden Owens then put a ground-rule double into the outfield to score Phillips.
  • UMSL quickly tied things up with a triple and sac fly in the top half of the second and took the lead in the fourth.
  • Back-to-back doubles from Owens and Jonah Sanford scored Will Brant to tie the game at four before Tweet came through again with a base knock up the middle to put the Cards back in front.
  • Both teams again exchanged runs as the Tritons got a two-run double to retake the lead but Jewell came right back with RBI from Cale Blasi, Wilcox and Tweet to go in front, 9-6.
  • A Brant solo home run gave the Cardinals an extra insurance run and it was needed as UMSL scored three runs on just one hit in the top of the seventh to pull within one but a groundout ended the threat.

KEY STATS
  • Tweet led the offense with three hits, including two for extra bases, to go with four RBI.
  • Wilcox, Epp, Owens and Sanford all each had two hits while Brant scored three times.
  • Chandler Ashby (5-0) was shaky at time but held on to his unblemished record with seven earned with eight strikeouts in six frames of work.
