Cardinals Blast Seven Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Bemidji State

LIBERTY, Mo. - The offense put on a show on Saturday afternoon as the William Jewell baseball team swept a doubleheader over Bemidji State by scores of 5-4 and 17-6. The Cardinals improve to 6-3 on the season. 

Game 1 (Jewell 5, Bemidji State 4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bemidji State took an early lead in game one on a two-run home run by Jack Munson in the first inning. 
  • Alex Epp blasted his first long ball of the season in the bottom half of the frame, to cut the BSU lead in half, 2-1, before a Jonah Sanford sac fly tied things up in the second.
  • Jake Wilcox put a sac fly into center field, scoring Sanford in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cardinals their first lead of the day, but the Beavers got two on a balk and a wild pitch in the sixth to back in front, 4-3. 
  • In the sixth inning, Will Bradt singled up the middle to score Sanford and tie the game at four. 
  • With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Quincy Aldrich sent a ball over the right field wall for a walk off home run. 

KEY STATS
  • Epp and Jordan Phillips led the offense with three hits a piece while Brant and Cale Blasi added two each. 
  • Sanford led the way with two runs. 
  • Drew Dant (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing the final inning. 

Game 2 (Jewell 17, Bemidji State 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The offensive explosion in game two got started in the second inning as Ben Click send a three-run shot over the wall, followed by another three-run shot from Kaden Owens in the next frame to quickly make it 6-0.
  • Jewell hit two more home runs in the fourth inning off the bats of Wilcox and Epp to push the score to 9-0. 
  • In the fifth, the Cardinals loaded the bases for pinch hitter Camden Dayton who blasted his first career home run to left field to make it a 13-run Jewell lead.
  • The Beavers got on the board with three runs in the top half of the sixth but the Cards plated three more on RBI from Wilcox and Brant. 
  • Bemidji State added three more in the seventh a strikeout from Steven Keech ended the game.  

KEY STATS
  • The Cardinals posted five home runs in game two, by Wilcox, Epp, Dayton, Owens and Click. 
  • Jewell finished with 12 hits, led by Epp's three, while Wilcox, Sanford and Click all had two apiece. 
  • Dayton led the team with four RBI while Wilcox and Epp each scored three times. 
  • Chandler Ashby (2-0) got the win in the nightcap, working 5.2 frames while tying the NCAA era single game record with 12 strikeouts.
