Cardinals Take Game One, Fall in 12 Inning Affair to Split with Rockhurst

LIBERTY, Mo. - William Jewell and Rockhurst enjoyed two more highly contested games on Saturday as the Cardinals took the opener, 4-2, before Rockhurst came away with a 5-2 win in a lengthy 12-inning contest. Jewell moves to 24-16 on the year and 12-11 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

GAME ONE (Jewell 4, Rockhurst 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell grabbed the early lead to open the day. Three straight base hits scored the first run as Alex Epp singled up the middle to plate Jake Wilcox. Will Brant followed with a sac fly to center while Drew Reed had one of his own to left to give the Cards a 3-0 advantage.
  • In the fourth, Rockhurst got on the board, taking advantage of a double and a passed ball to cut the lead to one.
  • The Cardinals got a much needed insurance run in the home half of the sixth as Epp led off with a double and advanced on a balk. Another sac fly from Brant pushed him across to make it 4-2.

KEY STATS
  • Epp led the Cardinals with two hits and two runs while Brant drove in a pair.
  • Chandler Ashby (7-1), the GLVC wins leader, tossed his fourth complete game of the season, allowing just one earned run on two hits.

GAME TWO (Rockhurst 5, Jewell 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dawson Tweet led off the third inning with a solo home run over the right field wall to give Jewell the lead.
  • Rockhurst came back with two runs on two hits and a Jewell error in the fourth to go in front, 2-1.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth, Reed led off with a triple to right center. With one out, a squeeze play was on but the pitch was off the mark and the Hawk catcher attempted to get Reed coming down the line but an errant throw allowed the Cardinal DH to trot home and tie the game at two.
  • From there, neither offense could muster much of anything as 21 combined runners were left on base, including 14 who reached on a free pass, over the next eight frames, pushing the game into the 12th inning. The Cardinals had two different bases loaded, no out, situations on defense but the defense came up clutch, including throwing a runner out at the plate in the seventh.
  • In the top of the 12th, a walk and a single put two in scoring position. A fly out ended with a Hawk runner caught between first and second but a throwing error allowed the lead runner to score and give Rockhurst the lead. Hawk first baseman Andrew Loeffelman added insurance with a two-run home run to push the lead to 5-2.

KEY STATS
  • Jewell was outhit 10-5 as Tweet had two, including a home run.
  • The Cardinals swiped four bases by Wilcox, Reed, Jordan Phillisp and Cale Blasi
  • Drew Dant (1-1) took the loss in relief, working 3.2 frames allowing three earned runs.
