Cardinals Bounce Back with Two Wins at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team bounced back from a series opening loss at Maryville to take a pair of wins over the Saints on Saturday by scores of 4-3 and 7-5. The Cardinals improved to 27-18 overall and 15-12 in conference action.

GAME ONE (Jewell 4, Maryville 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell drew the first tally as back-to-back walks followed by a wild pitch put two in scoring position for Jonah Sanford who put a deep fly ball into left to score Drew Reed
  • The Saints came right back with consecutive singles in the bottom half of the second to tie things up at one before taking the lead in the third. Maryville then added a solo home run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, down to their final opportunity, the Cardinals rallied. With two on, Alex Epp singled up the middle to tie the game at three before Jordan Phillips singled to right, allowing the go ahead run to cross the plate.
  • Maryville put the winning run on base but Caden Wanless came on and forced a double play to shut the Saints down.

KEY STATS
  • Dawson Tweet picked up a team high two hits, including a double, while Epp, Phillips, Sanford and Jake Wilcox each had one.
  • Jake MacDonald (2-4) put together a solid start, working 6.1 frames, allowing three earned runs while striking out six.
  • Wanless (3) grabbed his third save of the year.

GAME TWO (Jewell 7, Maryville 5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tweet got the scoring started early in game two with a solo home run in the top of the first but the Saints responded right away with a run in the home half.
  • In the third, Epp blasted a three run shot to right field to open up a 4-1 advantage for the Cardinals.
  • Maryville got two runs back in the bottom half to pull within one before two more tallies in the fifth gave the Saints a 5-4 lead.
  • Jewell rallied with two runs in the sixth as Reed doubled to left center, scoring two. Kaden Owens added another insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to right.
  • The Saints again put the winning run on base but a strikeout ended the threat.
