Cardinals Drop Two at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The William Jewell baseball dropped two on Saturday at Lewis University by finals of 7-6 and 6-3 in back-and-forth affairs. The Cardinals fall to 19-11 on the season and 8-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action with the losses. 

GAME ONE (Lewis 7, Jewell 6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jordan Phillips grounded out in the top of the first to score Dawson Tweet, who had doubled, to give the Cardinals the early advantage. The Flyers quickly tied things scoring in the bottom half of the inning. 
  • Jewell added three more in the top of the second frame as four consecutive singles scored Kaden Owens before Jonah Sanford crossed the plate on a sac fly by Tweet. After another base hit, Jake Wilcox sent a deep sac fly to center to score Drew Reed and put the Cards up 4-1.
  • Lewis got back on the board with a run in the third before tying the game in the fourth with two unearned runs. 
  • In the top half of the fifth, Jewell went back in front as Will Brant scored on a wild pitch but the Flyers tied the game once again in the sixth. 
  • Owens doubled to lead off the ninth and was pinch ran for by Camden Dayton who came around to score on a sac fly from Reed to give the Cardinals the advantage with three outs to go.
  • The Flyers got a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases for Thomas Fox who singled up the middle to score two and win it for Lewis, 7-6.

KEY STATS
  • Jewell pounded out 13 hits, led by three from Owens, includidng a double. 
  • Phillips, Sanford and Alex Epp each recorded two hits. 
  • Jack Wells (1-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in relief. 
  • The starter, Levi Ebersoldt, worked five frames while Caden Wanless also appeared in three innings in relief. 

GAME TWO (Lewis 6, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis jumped out on top in the nightcap, scoring a run on a groundout in the bottom of the first but the Cardinals tied things up in the third as Quincy Aldrich was hit by a pitch and scored on a Wilcox single to left. 
  • The Flyers retook the lead in the bottom half of the third inning and expanded it to 4-1 in the fourth. 
  • With the bases loaded, Jewell was gifted a balk to score Tweet followed by an RBI groundout from Phillips to pull back within one.
  • Lewis scored a run in the fifth and the sixth to push the score to the final, 6-3.

KEY STATS
  • The Cardinals were limited to five hits in game two, one each from Epp, Wilcox, Phillips, Sanford and Cale Blasi
  • Chandler Ashby (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three earned over six innings of work while striking out six. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals and Flyers will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 p.m.
