MARION, Ill. - The William Jewell baseball team posted a big 13-3 win in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Illinois. The Cardinals came in as the No. 7 seed and upset second seed and No. 19 ranked Illinois Springfield to move into the winner's side of the bracket and move to 30-21 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell broke the scoreless tie first in the top of the second as Jordan Phillips led off with a triple to left center and score on the sac fly from Quincy Aldrich.
- Illinois Springfield came back with two runs in the bottom half to take the lead but in the fifth, the Cardinals responded with two of their own. Dawson Tweet singled through the right side to score Jonah Sanford before scoring himself on a wild pitch.
- UIS tied the game at three in the home half of the fifth but Drew Reed put Jewell back in front in the seventh with a sac fly to score Sanford. Jake Wilcox then crossed the plate on another wild ptich to make it 5-3 in favor fo the Cardinals.
- In the top of the ninth, leading by three, Jewell blew things open, scoring seven runs on five hits. With the bases loaded, Ben Click drew a walk before four straight base hits, including back-to-back doubles from Tweet and Alex Epp made it a 10-run victor, 13-3.
KEY STATS
- Epp finished 5-for-5 at the plate with a double, RBI and run scored.
- Tweet and Kaden Owens added two runs while the former drove in a team high four runs.
- Chandler Ashby (10-1) earned his 10th win of the year to become the NCAA era leader in single season wins for the Cardinals. The redshirt sophomore picked up another complete game, allowing just three earned runs with 11 strikeouts.
