LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball took game one over Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon by a final of 3-1 but were tripped up, 8-3, in the nightcap. The Cardinals move to 29-19 on the season and 17-14 in conference play.
GAME ONE (Jewell 3, SBU 1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a four pitch walk put Jake Wilcox on base, Dawson Tweet took the first he saw over the right center field wall for a quick 2-0 Cardinal lead.
- A solo blast from Hagenhoff in the top of the second cut the lead in half but Quincy Aldrich's solo shot in the bottom half of the pushed it back to two runs.
- Both teams put runners on over the next four frames but neither could score.
KEY STATS
- Jewell got the win, despite just two hits, both on home runs from Tweet and Aldrich.
- Jackson Bodinson (6-3) picked up the complete game win, allowing just a single earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.
GAME TWO (SBU 8, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A home run in the top of the second have SBU their first lead of the day but Jewell responded with a run in the home half as Jordan Phillips drove in Drew Reed who had doubled.
- The Bearcats scored two runs in the third to go back in front but a wild pitch allowed Aldrich to score and cut the deficit to one run, 3-2.
- In the fourth, with two in scoring position, Aldrich sent a deep fly ball into center to plate Will Brant and tie the game.
- Southwest Baptist scored three runs on three hits in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to bring the score to the final of 8-3.
KEY STATS
- Jewell was out hit 12-8 as Tweet and Reed each had two.
- Jake MacDonald (2-5) suffered the loss, working 4.1 frames with six strikeouts.
