LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on Friday evening on day two of the Kansas City Classic, falling 3-0 to Sioux Falls and Emporia State. The Cardinals drop to 1-2 on the season.
GAME 1 | Sioux Falls 3, Jewell 0
- The Cardinals started off strong in the opening set, taking a 7-4 lead after a kill from Anna Godfredsen. Sioux Falls used an 8-1 run to go from down to up six, 16-10. The teams traded points the rest of the way but the deficit was too large as USF took the first set, 25-18.
- Set two was back-and-forth until a 4-0 run late pushed the Cougars in front 21-16. The Cardinals made it interesting thought, using two kills from Bella LaPorta and a block from Jesa Wallace and Alex Dvorak to get back within four but a kill by USF gave them the second set, 25-21.
- Jewell held a 17-16 lead midway through set three after back-to-back kills from Godfredsen and LaPorta but a quick 3-0 run pushed USF back in front and they did not look back, moving to a 25-19 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta finished with a team high 12 kills while Godfredsen added eight.
- Samantha Thompson had a double-double of 19 assists and 13 digs to go with two aces.
GAME 2 | Emporia State 3, Jewell 0
- Jewell grabbed an early lead in the opening frame of the nightcap, going on top 14-12 following a Wallace kill. The Hornets responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead but the Cardinals did not go away, tying the set at 22. ESU got three straight points to take the opener, 25-22.
- Set two was a tight one until a 4-0 run by the Hornets made it 19-14. A LaPorta kills combined with a block from Wallace and Dvorak pulled Jewell back within 21-17 but the comeback came up short, 25-19.
- The two teams traded points for much of the third until ESU put together four straight kills, with three from Sandora Sasaki, to go in front 23-17. Maliyah Johnson ended the skid with a kill but the Hornets finished off the set, 25-18.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta had a game high 12 kills with Dvorak posting 10.
- Wallace led the team with 17 assists and four blocks while Hannah Cope had nine digs.
