LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball wrapped up the inaugural Kansas City Classic on their home floor on Saturday with a heartbreaking five set loss to No. 13 ranked Northwest Missouri State. The Cardinals held a 2-0 set lead but couldn't hold off the Bearcat surge late to fall to 1-3 on the opening weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, aided by three kills and a block from Bella LaPorta. Jewell continued their strong start, pushing their advantage to six after three straight kills from LaPorta, Anna Godfredsen and Katy Garrison to make it a commanding 17-11 lead. NWMSU got back within three but the Cardinals scored the four point to take the opener 25-18.
- Set two started off more competitive but Jewell used an 8-2 run go in front 18-13 after an Godfredsen kill. The Bearcats again rallied to get within three but Godfredsen put two more down to seal the set 25-23.
- The Cardinals looked as though they might cruise to a sweep, jumping out to a 13-6 advantage in set three but Northwest had other plans, going on a 17-6 run to go on top 23-19. An error late, made it a two-point set but Northwest got a kill from Lauren Casey to win 25-22 and stay alive.
- Set four was a battle, as the Bearcats grabbed an early 14-11 lead only to see the Cardinals come back and get within one. Trailing 23-18 late, Jewell scored five of the next six to get within one but a service error gave Northwest the set 25-23 and forced the finale.
- The Bearcats carried all their momentum from the end of the fourth into the start of the deciding fifth, grabbing a 10-1 lead and never looked back, winning 15-5.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta posted 23 kills while Godfredsen had 15 as the Cardinals outhit the Bearcats .253 to .244
- Thompson finished with five aces and 24 assists with Jesa Wallace also handing out 25 helpers.
- Hannah Cope was tops with 12 digs while Garrison and Alex Dvorak each had four blocks.
- Brooke Tholen added 11 digs off the bench.

Jewell looks to get back on track next weekend as they travel to the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas for four matches.
