Cardinals Sweep Arkansas Tech to Split Saturday Doubleheader

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team swept Arkansas Tech in the second half of a non-conference doubleheader. The Cardinals fell 3-0 to Rockhurst University earlier in the day to move to 5-5 on the season. 

Game One: Rockhurst 3, Jewell 0 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals took an early lead in the opener, going on a 5-2 run to go on top 13-9. Jewell extended the lead to 19-15 before the Hawks rallied with an 8-1 run to go in front 23-20. The Cards go back within one after a kill from Jesa Wallace but a kill from Rockhurst ended the first set.
  • The Hawks held control throughout set two, taking an early nine point lead and cruising to a 25-15 win. 
  • Jewell regained the momentum in set three, breaking out to a 12-6 lead behind back-to-back aces from Alex Dvorak. With the Cardinals leading 20-15 after a Bella LaPorta kill, Rockhurst again rallied to retake the lead and take the set 25-22. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • LaPorta led the offense with 15 kills while Dvorak added eight to go with four blocks and two aces. 
  • Alexis Nunn posted 17 digs with Brooke Tholen picking up 12. 
  • Wallace and Samantha Thompson each finished with 14 assists with the former adding three blocks.

Game Two: Jewell 3, Arkansas Tech 0 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first set of the afternoon match behind Alexis Nunn's serve and three kills from Dvoark. The Cardinals extended the lead to 22-12 and rolled to 25-18 win, capped by a kill from Katy Garrison
  • In set two, Jewell again grabbed an early lead but the Golden Suns rallied to pull within one, 17-16. The Cardinals finished on an 8-2 run with two kills from Garrison to take a 25-18 win. 
  • Arkansas Tech held a 19-17 lead in set three but a quick 5-0 run with kills from Dvorak and Anna Godfresen put the Cards on top, 22-19. The Golden Suns rallied to tie things up at 24 but back-to-back points from Dvorak and LaPorta sealed the win 26-24 and 3-0. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell hit .278 as a team while holding ATU to a .220 clip. 
  • LaPorta and Dvorak led the way with 14 and 12 kills a piece, along with two blocks. 
  • Thompson handed out 21 assists while Tholen led the defense with nine digs. 

UP NEXT
Jewell hosts Missouri Southern on Tuesday evening for a non-conference match up. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
