Cardinals Open Season with Dominant 42-6 Win Over Fort Lewis

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team opened the 2023 campaign on Saturday morning with a 42-6 victory over Fort Lewis College (Colo.) marking their first season opening win since 2019. This is also the first consecutive wins since 2015 after closing last year with a win over Quincy. The Cardinals scored early and often, forced three turnovers and were firing on all cylinders in their debut.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After going three-and-out on their opening drive, the Cardinals found the end zone on the next three. After an incomplete pass over the middle, CJ Ward came back with a 16 yard toss to Nathan Barnett for the first touchdown of the season.
  • The Skyhawks came right back with a 66-yard strike but a failed two-point conversion to make it 7-6.
  • Jewell used a strong combo of the air and the ground on the next drive to get down to the nine yard line where Kaylin Merriweather scampered into the end zone for his first career score.
  • Fort Lewis attempted a 22-yard field goal but Javion Macias got his hands on it for the block right into the arms of Sean Mitchell who ran it back 40-plus yards to give the Cards strong field position. The offense struck quickly as Ward found Deldrionn Amos for 24 yards to push the lead to 21-6.
  • With just second remaining on the clock in the opening half and Fort Lewis driving, Kwesi Hooks grabbed his first interception of the year, running it back 24 yards to midfield to close the half.
  • The Cardinals opened the third period with another Ward to Amos connection for 16 yards to expand the lead to 22. On the first play of the next drive Keaundre McCullough ran 22 yards to the house and make it a 35-6 advantage.
  • Jewell started the final frame with a quick 46-yard strike from Ward to Peyton Moore to push the lead to 42-6. The Cardinals grabbed two interceptions in the quarter by Mitchell and Kevin Roberson and made a goal line stand to keep the Skyhawks off the board.
