Last Minute Score Lifts Kentucky Wesleyan Past Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - For the second year in a row the matchup between William Jewell football and Kentucky Wesleyan came down to the final minute with the Panthers escaping with a 41-34 victory. The Cardinals drop to 1-1 on the season while KWC improves to the same.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinal defense wrapped up a goal line, fourth down stand to set up the first Jewell score. Staring at 3rd and 23, CJ Ward found Deldrionn Amos for 86 yards to put the Cardinals on top 7-0. The connection marks the longest pass reception of the NCAA era.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan immediately responded with a 58-yard touchdown reception to knot things up.
  • The offense stalled over the two drives but rallied to put three on the board midway through the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal from Paul Geelen and retake the lead.
  • The Panthers scored 13 unanswered to close the half and lead 20-10 at the break.
  • On the opening drive of the second half, Ward connected with Nathan Barnett for a 10-yard score and get back within three only to see the Panthers push it back to 10.
  • Late in the third quarter, Keaundre McCullough broke loose for a 56-yard run, seventh longest of the NCAA era, to make it 27-24, but again KWC pushed it back to a 10-point lead.
  • The Cardinals rallied in the fourth quarter as Caleb Cortez blocked a Kentucky Wesleyan punt allowing Angelo Batrez to fall on the ball and score to make it a three point game once again. With under two minutes to play, Geelen hit a 48-yard field goal to tie the game at 34-all.
  • KWC responded again, however, with a 78-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds on the clock to secure the win.
