ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday night with a tough road test against No. 5 ranked and unbeaten Missouri-St. Louis. The Cardinals were competitive but fell 3-0 to drop to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the league. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Jewell came out of the gates strong, taking an early 6-2 lead. The Tritons rallied with a 6-2 run midway through to take their first lead and finished on a 7-0 streak to take the opener 25-16. 
• UMSL held the early advantage in set two, leading 9-4. The Cardinals were the beneficiaries of back-to-back errors from the Tritons to pull within 16-14 but the home team finished on a 9-3 run to win 25-17. 
• In set three, UMSL jumped out to a 12-4 lead after four Cardinal errors. Jewell did not go quietly, pulling within three after an ace from Samantha Thompson and kill by Bella LaPorta. The Tritons closed the set by outscoring the Cards 8-5 to win 25-19 and 3-0. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Jewell was held to a .079 attack percentage as a team, led by LaPorta's nine kills. 
• Thompson picked up 12 assists while Alexis Nunn had eight digs.
