Cardinals Push No. 19 Lewis to Brink

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team challenged the No. 19 ranked Lewis University on Friday night and pushed the Flyers to the edge before falling 3-1. The Cardinals drop to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals started strong in the opener, playing even with their ranked opponent, tying things at 11 after a kill from Bella LaPorta. Lewis followed with a 10-2 run to go on top 21-13, rolling to the 25-18 win.
  • The teams went back-and-forth for much of the second frame with Jewell leading 20-18 after a service error from Flyers. Lewis rallied to retake a 21-20 edge but three straight kills from LaPorta, Maliyah Johnson and Anna Godfredsen pushed the Cards back in front. Two errors by Lewis' Megan Schlechte gave Jewell the set, 25-23.
  • The Flyers took a commanding 17-9 lead in set three before Jewell rallied. Behind Samantha Thompson's serve the Cards pulled within three but Lewis responded and closed the set, 25-19.
  • Set four was another back-and-forth frame until the Cardinals went on a 7-2 run to go on top 18-14 after three consecutive kills by Godfredsen. The Flyers rallied with a 8-2 run to retake the lead. Jewell did not go quietly as the teams traded points before back-to-back kills from Lewis ended things at 28-26.
