Big Second Quarter Leads Cardinals to Homecoming Victory Over Upper Iowa

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team grabbed their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season on Saturday, downing Upper Iowa University by a final of 30-13. The victory moves the Cardinals to 2-2 on the season and marked the first Homecoming win since 2018. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got on the board first as Paul Geelen connected on a 48-yard field goal, to tie his career high. 
  • In the second quarter, Jewell started quickly as Keaundre McCullough ran eight yards into the end zone to make it a 10-0 game. The Peacocks responded with a score to cut the lead to three.
  • From there, Jewell scored two touchdowns in a span of 24 seconds. A a 37-yard completion to Layne Cavanah set up a five-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Thomas. An interception on the first play of the UIU drive by Sean Mitchell put the Cardinals in scoring again. On the ensuing pass, CJ Ward found Deldrionn Amos for 18 yards in the back of the end zone to put Jewell up 23-7 at the break. 
  • After a scoreless fourth quarter, Upper Iowa scored early in the fourth but a failed two-point conversion kept it a 10-point game. 
  • With under three minutes to play, Taylor Eggers found Nathan Barnett for 24 yards for the final score of the game and bring the score to the final of 30-13. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • McCullough finished with 68 rushing yards and one touchdown while Barnett picked up 105 receiving yards and a score. 
  • Ward went 13-for-19 for 191 passing yards and two scores. 
  • Mitchell led the team with 12 tackles and one interception. 
  • Kwesi Hooks also grabbed a pick while Justin Endicott forced a UIU fumble. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is back in action next Saturday with a tough test on the road at Indianapolis.
