Last Second Shot Falls Short as Cardinals Drop Low Scoring Contest at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team got off a shot at the buzzer but it fell short as Maryville University escaped with a 61-59 win on Thursday evening. The Cardinals drop to 10-6 on the season and 4-4 in the GLVC with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals fell into an early hole as a three by Maryville gave the hosts a 17-10 lead. Kyle Scharbrough scored four quick points to stop the skid and Isaac Patterson's three capped a 10-3 run for Jewell.
  • Maryville followed the Cardinals run with one of their own to go back in front by eight but Jewell again rallied to tie the game at 29 with back-to-back buckets from Eli Wingert. The Saints took a 33-29 lead into the break with two scores in the last 59 seconds of the half.
  • The Cardinals came out of the intermission with a 14-5 run, behind two triples by Jordan Jermain, to take a 43-38 lead. Over the final 12 minutes, there were five ties and eight lead changes as the two teams battled. Trailing by two with nine seconds remaining, Jewell got a defensive rebound off a missed free throw and went the length of the court, getting off a shot at the buzzer but could not get it fall.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Trey Shannon picked up a double-double, the first of his career, with 16 points and a team high 10 rebounds.
  • McKinley added 16 points and Jermain 10 as the Cardinals shot 43% from the field but just 30% from three.
  • Majority of the scoring occured in the paint with the Saints holding the edge, 42-34.
