Cardinals Complete Comeback but Fall in Overtime at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - For the second consecutive week, the William Jewell football team went to overtime with one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent, but fell 38-31 on Saturday at Upper Iowa. The Cardinals drop to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Things started slowly for the Cardinals as Upper Iowa broke out to 17-0 lead with two sacks in the early going.
  • Late in the second quarter, Jewell completed four passes to drive down the field to the red zone before Tucker Griffin ran it in from two yards out to get Jewell on the board.
  • The Peacocks added another score to close the half and lead 24-6 headed to the locker room.
  • Jewell added a 33-yard field goal from Josh Click to open the second half scoring and followed with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Nate Barnett on the next drive. Keaundre McCullough ran it in to complete the two-point conversion and make it 24-17 at the end of the third period.
  • After Justin Endicott recovered a fumble, Jewell went down the field with Griffin again connected with Barnett for a one-yard touchdown pass but the two-point conversion failed as the Cardinals trailed 24-23.
  • The Peacocks fumbled the ensuing kick off and it was recovered by MicahJo Barnett giving the ball right back to Jewell on the UIU 34 yard line but a field goal attempt from 31 yards was blocked.
  • The Cardinal defense forced a turnover on downs to give Jewell a chance with just over three minutes remaining. Griffin found AJ Austene for 47 yards and a touchdown and converted the two-point attempt to go in front for the first time, 31-24.
  • Upper Iowa marched down field to score and tie the game with just 30 seconds remaining to force overtime.
  • In the overtime period, UIU scored on a two-yard rush while the Cardinals were unable to find the end zone, giving the Peacocks the win.
