LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team opened their Great Lakes Valley Conference match up with Maryville strong but fell a 3-1 to drop to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in league play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Trailing 7-5 early in the opener, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run, led by a kill from Macy Bartlett. Maryville tied things up at 12 but Jewell followed with another run to open up a 21-16 advantage. The Saints made things interesting late, pulling within one before Bella LaPorta ended things 25-23, in favor of Jewell. 
• With the Cardinals leading 15-14 midway through set two, Maryville went on a 7-0 run. Jewell rallied to take a pull within 23-22, after two blocks from LaPorta and Katy Garrison, but the Saints won two of the final three points to win 25-23. 
• Maryville broke out to a commanding lead in set three and rolled to a 23-13 win to take the lead. 
• The Saints continued their momentum into set four, jumping out to a 15-5 lead. Jewell put together a rally to pull within 18-14, but MU finished on a 7-2 run to win 25-16. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• LaPorta and Garrison led the offense with 16 and 12 kills, respectively with the former adding 25 digs. 
• Alexis Nunn finished with 20 digs with Samantha Thompson handed out 24 assists. 
• Jewell out blocked Maryville 11-6, led by Garrison's 10 to tie her career high. LaPorta and Madison Grekstas added four each.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals are back on the road next weekend at the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond, Ind. Opponents will be announced early next week.
