Cardinals Sweep Pair of Matches to Open Midwest Region Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team swept their way through day one of the largest regular season tournament in the NCAA at the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday by defeating Ursuline and Saginaw Valley. The Cardinals improve to 7-13 overall with the wins. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 3, Ursuline 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started fast with a 6-0 run to open the game on three straight kills from Caroline Beckmann. Another 5-0 run midway through the set expanded the Jewell lead to 11 before Ursuline responded. The Saints pulled within five late but a kill and an ace by Emma Lea Benney helped end things 25-18.
  • With the Cardinals leading 14-10, they went on an 11-1 run to close the second set in dominant fashion, 25-11. 
  • Jewell took an early lead in set three and Macy Bartlett's three consecutive kills extended it to five late. An Amauri Browning ace and Beckmann kill finished off the sweep 25-19. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell hit .308 on the game while holding Ursuline to .121 while totaling nine aces.
  • Beckmann finished with a career high 19 kills on a .419 attack percentage, to go with four blocks. 
  • Browning had a game high 12 digs while Samantha Thompson finished with 28 assists, 10 digs and two aces. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 3, Saginaw Valley 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set one was back-and-forth with each team trading points in the early going. With Jewell leading by one, they went on a quick 5-1 run to take a late 21-16 lead. SVSU got back within three but a service error gave the Cards a 25-21 win. 
  • After Saginaw scored the set's first four points, Jewell responded with a 17-6 run, led by four kills from Bella LaPorta. SVSU responded by going on a 10-4 run of their own to pull back within 21-20. Four kills from four different players sealed the set in favor of the Cardinals. 
  • Jewell was dominant in the finale, breaking out to an 18-6 lead after a kill from Lauren Harrell, and rolled to a 25-13 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals held their opponent to a .093 attack percentage while totaling 53 kills to Saginaw Valley's 39. 
  • LaPorta finished with a game high 17 kills while adding 13 digs. 
  • Thompson had a team best 21 assists with Harrell adding a dozen. 
  • Alexis Nunn posted 14 digs while Katy Garrison led with four blocks.
