Cardinals Sweep Missouri S&T to Earn First GLVC Win

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Missouri S&T on Friday night to kick off their home stand. The Cardinals improve to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals came out firing early, grabbing a 12-4 lead behind four kills from Bella LaPorta and two each by Katy Garrison and Caroline Beckmann. Missouri S&T eventually rallied, getting within three late before another LaPorta kills finished off set number one, 25-22. 
  • Jewell carried the momentum into set two, opening up a 22-11 lead after back-to-back Miner errors. S&T went on a quick 5-1 run but a Garrison kill and LaPorta solo block gave the Cards the 25-16 win. 
  • After the break, Missouri S&T came out with renewed energy, doubling up Jewell early, 10-5. A block from Garrison and Macy Bartlett sparked a 12-6 run to give the Cardinals 17-16 advantage. After the Miners went back in front by one, the Cards finished on a 7-1 run to win 25-20 and earn the sweep. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell hit .286 on the night while holding their opponent to a .093 attack percentage, including -.106 in set three. 
  • The Cardinals out blocked Missouri S&T, 12-3, led by six from Garrison and five by Beckmann.
  • LaPorta paced the offense with 22 kills and grabbed a double-double with 13 digs. 
  • Alexis Nunn had 18 digs and eight assists with Samantha Thompson totaling 22 helpers and Olivia Starr, 15. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday as they host Maryville in a GLVC match up that is a rematch of an early season non-conference meeting.
