Jewell Football Heads to Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team heads down Highway 7 this weekend to Southwest Baptist to take on the Bearcats in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match up. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • After winning their first three, Jewell enters the week looking to snap a four-game skid. The Cardinals will also be searching for win No. 4 for the first time since 2015 and their first two-win conference season since 2017.
  • After a season high 10 penalties against Upper Iowa, the Cardinals back last week more disciplined, committing just a single violation for five yards. Jewell enters week eight ranked ninth in Division II in fewest penalties per game and 11th in penalty yards per game. Three of the top-11 most disciplined teams nationally are GLVC schools.
  • The Cardinals have been strong this fall on first downs on both sides of the ball. Jewell is 38th in Division II in first down offense with 146 while also holding opponents to just 118, good for third in the GLVC and 54th nationally.
  • Opponents have attempted just five punt returns on the season and haven't gotten far. The Cardinals are 36th in the nation in punt return defense, allowing just 4.17 yards per return on average.
  • The rushing offense got back on track last weekend, totaling 200 yards on the ground, after just 67 the week prior, with three touchdowns. Keaundre McCullough put together another solid outing with 146 net yards and a score, his fifth game of at least 90 yards. Additionally, Jake Shaffer ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals are 49th in Division II with 159 rushing yards per game.
  • With his 146 yard performance last week, McCullough remains in the top-5 nationally in all-purpose yards per game (162.50), rushing touchdowns (10), rushing yards (917), and rushing yards per game (152.8).
  • Shaffer enters the week atop the depth chart for the first time this season. The freshman quarterback took over in the second half last weekend and finished with 60 yards and two scores on the ground while also going 6-for-14 for 86 yards through the air. This will be the third different starting quarterback this season for Jewell.
  • Defensively, Adam Callahan continues to put on a clinic picking up his third consecutive double-digit tackle game last week with 13. The senior is currently seventh in Division II and tops in the GLVC with 10.7 take downs per game. Against Missouri S&T, he become Jewell's NCAA era lead with 286 career tackles, surpassing Jimmy DeStefano's (2012-14) 280. Additionally, Sean Mitchell joined the 200 tackle club, currently sitting at 206.
  • The defense was tested last weekend and will look to rebound in a big way this weekend. The Cardinals allowed a season high 239 rushing yards and two big completions of 40-plus yards that Missouri S&T used to put up 49 points. Over the course of the season, the Jewell defense has been tested and responded well the following outing.
