Strong Start Not Enough as Cardinals Fall to Upper Iowa in Five

FAYETTE, Iowa - The William Jewell volleyball team took a 2-0 lead on Saturday but Upper Iowa rallied to win in five sets and drop the Cardinals to 7-17 overall and 1-7 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Leading 11-7 early, Jewell went on a 13-2 run, led by three kills apiece from Bella LaPorta and Emma Lea Benney. The Peacocks got a kill to stop the skid but a service error gave the Cards the set, 25-10. 
  • Jewell built an early 16-10 lead in set two before Upper Iowa got back within three after a hitting error. The Cardinals used a quick 7-4 spurt to expand their advantage to 24-17 after a LaPorta ace and rolled to the 25-18 win. 
  • Upper Iowa was able to slow the Jewell offense in set three, holding the Cards to an .027 attack percentage after hitting .380 through the first two frames. The Peacocks opened up a 23-12 advantage early before Jewell got three straight kills to pull within eight but UIU finished things off, 25-15. 
  • The hosts started set four with a commanding 10 point lead and cruised to a 25-13 win to force a deciding fifth set.  
  • Upper Iowa got five early kills to take a 10-3 lead before LaPorta ended the run with a kill of her own. Two service errors by the Peacocks got Jewell back within six late but Marissa Becker ended the match with a kill, 15-8, in favor of the home team.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell was limited to a .156 attack percentage for the match with Upper Iowa hitting. 284. 
  • LaPorta led the Cardinals with a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs, both team highs. 
  • Caroline Beckmann had 12 kills with Lauren Harrell totaling 25 assists and Amauri Browning 10 digs. 
  • Samantha Thompson also had 14 assists and a game high four aces. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns home for the final time next weekend as they host Quincy University and Illinois Springfield on Friday and Saturday.
