LaPorta's 29 Kills Leads Cardinals at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a heart breaker in five sets at Indianapolis on Friday evening to drop to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both offenses started slowly, each committing 11 errors in the opening frame. Trailing 14-10, the Cardinals were the recipients of three UIndy errors and a Bella LaPorta kill to knot the set at 14-all. Jewell took a late lead as points from LaPorta and Katy Garrison gave them a 23-21 advantage but the Hounds rallied to take the opening 30-28. 
  • The Cardinals came out on fire in the second set, grabbing a 13-1 lead after an Amauri Browning ace. Jewell rolled to a 25-14 win to tie the match at one set a piece. 
  • UIndy returned the favor in set three, grabbing a commanding lead on their way to a 25-10 win. 
  • Trailing 21-19 late in set four, Jewell went on a quick 5-0 spurt, capped by a kill by Macy Bartlett to take a 24-21 lead. Garrison finished things off with a kill to set things to a deciding set four. 
  • With the Cardinals trailing 9-6 midway through the finale, Jewell got two aces from LaPorta to go in front 11-9. The Greyhounds won the final five points of the match to win 15-12 and 3-2. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • LaPorta led the Cardinals with a game-high and career high 29 kills to go with 18 digs and three aces. 
  • Madison Grekstas added 11 kills while Garrison had a team high seven blocks with Sarah Madsen adding four. 
  • Samantha Thompson handed out 30 assists with Olivia Starr adding 18. 
  • Browning and Alexis Nunn finished with 13 and 12 digs, respectively. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday as they travel to Lewis University at 3 p.m.
