Cardinals Push No. 22 UIndy to the Brink but Fall in Overtime

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team gave No. 22 ranked Indianapolis all they could handle on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 23-20 in overtime. The Cardinals drop to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the defense forced a three-and-out on the opening drive, Jewell took the early lead as Tucker Griffin was 8-for-8 culminating in a two-yard completion to Jalen Bethany for the score. 
  • UIndy responded immediately with a three yard touchdown run just three plays later to knot the score. 
  • The Greyhounds took the lead to start the second half with a 15-yard completion to Alonzo Derrick and took the 14-7 advantage into the break. 
  • After a scoreless third quarter, MicahJo Barnett sparked the Cardinals with a 63-yard touchdown run to tie things up at 14-all. 
  • Late in the period, Josh Click connected on a career high 47 yard field goal to put the Cardinals on top, 17-14, with under six to play. 
  • UIndy rallied in the final minute to go 60 yards and set up a 32-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. 
  • In the overtime period, Click put a 41-yard field goal into the wind through the uprights to give Jewell the lead, but UIndy used two plays to go 25 yards and score a touchdown to win 23-20.



INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Griffin was 21-of-31 for 121 yards and one score. AJ Austene was the most common target with seven catches while Jalen Bethany had six receptions for 42 yards. 
  • MicahJo Barnett finished with 86 yards on 18 carriers. 
  • Keagan Hart and Adam Callahan posted double figure tackles with 13 and 11, respectively with the former grabbing an interception. 
  • Sean Mitchell had two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery with Jayshawn Richmond forcing.
  • Jewell held the Greyhounds to just 2-of-12 on third down conversions and committed just three penalties, compared to UIndy's 10.  

UP NEXT
Jewell is back on the road next weekend as they travel to Upper Iowa for a 1 p.m. kick off.
