WICHITA, Kan. - The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 68-52 decision on Tuesday at Newman University to fall to 1-1 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter as a layup from Paris Opelt knotted things up and Kate Hillyer gave the Cardinals a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes. 
• After Newman went up by seven late in the second period, Ayden Shannon scored five straight points as Jewell trailed by three, 32-29, at the break. 
• The Cardinals remained close throughout the third period but an 11-0 run by Newman from the end of the third into the fourth frame helped push the Jet lead to as many as 20 late in the game. Kirsten Hauck came off the bench to hit two triples late for the Cardinals to get back within 16. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Shannon led the Cardinals with 20 points on 3-of-4 from long range with Bree Shannon pulling down a team high six rebounds. 
• The Cardinal offense struggled through cold shooting, just 28% for the night, but the bench outscored their counterparts 23-7, led by eight from Hauck. 
• Newman secured 13 offensive rebounds, leading 23 second chance points.
