Missouri Western Outlasts Cardinals in Overtime, 78-77

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team was defeated on Tuesday evening at Missouri Western by a final of 78-77 in overtime. The Cardinals fall to 3-3 on the season while the Griffons, who are receiving votes in the national polls, moved to 7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, grabbing an early nine point lead after a layup by Kyle Scharbrough on a behind-the-back feed from Kanukayi Gudza. Five straight points from Luke Jordan made it a double-digit lead late in the half but Missouri Western quickly cut things back to five with under 90 seconds to play. Jason Thirdkill, Jr. nailed a three pointer with 11 seconds on the clock to give the Cardinals a 40-31 lead at the break.
  • Opening the second half, Jewell went on an 18-11 run to expand their advantage to game high 16 points at 58-42 with just over 11 minutes to go. Over the next five-plus minutes the Griffons chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to just three with 5:19 remaining in regulation. Jewell got things back to seven after a bucket from Thirdkill, Jr. but Missouri Western followed with a 9-0 run to take their first lead since the opening seconds at 68-66. With less than one second on the clock Bradley Lightbourne hit a runner to tie things up and send it to overtime.
  • Jewell played from behind for the bulk of the extra period until Jordan Jermain's triple with 33 seconds to go to put the Cards in front by one. The Griffons got a jumper with four seconds remaining to retake the lead as Jewell's shot at the buzzer fell just short.
