Second Half Rally Gives Cardinals Key Win Over Illinois Springfield

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team rallied down from down as many eight to win 74-67 over Illinois Springfield to open Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Cardinals improve to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UIS got things started quickly grabbing an eight point lead midway through the first half, 23-15 after a three by Nate Shockey. The Cardinals got four triples over the next two minutes, two a piece from Luke Jordan and Jason Thirdkill, Jr. to cut the deficit to just three. Jordan Jermain caught fire late, scoring 10 points over the final minutes to knot things up with 44 seconds to go in the first half. A bucket from Shockey gave UIS a 40-38 advantage at the break.
  • The Prairie Stars again came out of the locker room on a big run, regaining their eight point lead less than five minutes into the second half. The Cardinals chipped away before a layup by Thirdkill, Jr. gave Jewell their first lead since early in the game at 56-54. The two teams traded buckets until back-to-back three pointers from the high scoring duo gave Jewell a critical two possession cushion with just over 90 seconds to go. The UIS committed three turnovers in those final seconds as Jewell cashed in each time to capture the win.
